little boxes instead of text

I have been working on filling out some tax information in a pdf document. Every now and then I will try to use the text type feature and instead I get little boxes.  I believe these are redaction boxes, but I'm not turning them on, so I have no idea where they are coming from.  The temporary fix is to not save the document, close it, then re-open.  I then type in until the problem occurs again.  I am running 11.03.34. Does anybody know how to fix this?
