Cannot select text in unprotected document

I have a number of pdfs created by a colleague. I cannot select or copy text from these documents in Nitro Pro 10.5.9.14. They are not protected / have no security. Also, I can select text when I use Adobe Reader to open these documents. I wanted to include a screenshot of document properties but I cannot figure out how to upload it.
