printing to PDF from Corel Paintshop Pro crashes

Corel PSP has a native filetype for layered images, .pspimage -- after spending quite a while composing an image for a book cover, when I tried printing it to a PDF (Nitro Pro 13.7), I suffered a total crash and data loss --  both PSP and Nitro Pro crashed completely, but what's worse was that my .pspimage composition was lost as well. It's been erased from disk and is unrecoverable, so I lost all my work. I've had similar problems before producing a PDF with Nitro Pro and Paint Shop Pro, they seem incompatible with each other.
